Key Ingredients for Gluten Free Pecan Pie (Paleo!)

Gluten free pecan pie isn’t just a dessert; it’s a delicious tradition that invites warmth and family togetherness. Let’s explore the key ingredients that come together to create this delightful dish.

  • Pecans: Using raw, unseasoned pecans ensures the best flavor. These nuts are the star of the pie, offering a rich, buttery crunch that satisfies your cravings. Toasting them lightly can enhance their nuttiness even more!

  • Maple Syrup: Pure maple syrup is used to sweeten the filling naturally. Not only does it provide a unique flavor, but it also aligns perfectly with the Paleo diet by avoiding refined sugars.

  • Coconut Oil: This serves as a healthier alternative to traditional butter, adding a light coconut flavor while keeping the pie crust flaky and tender.

  • Eggs: Vital for binding ingredients and achieving that perfectly custardy filling, eggs also contribute to the overall rich texture of the pie.

  • Almond Flour: For the crust, almond flour is a brilliant gluten-free option that lends a nutty taste and helps achieve a flaky pie base.

With these ingredients, gluten free pecan pie transforms into a healthful dessert that everyone can indulge in during gatherings or quiet evenings at home.

Variations on Gluten Free Pecan Pie

Exploring gluten free pecan pie recipes opens a world of delightful variations. It’s not just about finding an alternative to traditional pie; it’s about rediscovering flavor combinations that cater to your dietary needs while still treating your taste buds.

Chocolate Lovers’ Twist

If chocolate is your weakness, consider adding cocoa powder to the filling or folding in chopped dark chocolate. This rich addition not only enhances the flavor but also adds an attractive contrast to the golden pecans.

Maple Sweetener Option

For a deeper flavor profile, substitute traditional sweeteners with maple syrup or coconut sugar. Both options provide a unique sweetness while aligning beautifully with the gluten free and Paleo nature of the pie.

Nutty Variations

Why stick to pecans alone? You can experiment by mixing in walnuts or hazelnuts for added texture and flavor. These nuts carry their own distinct flavors, making each bite an adventure.

Spice It Up

Enhancing your pie with spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or even a hint of cayenne pepper can elevate your gluten free pecan pie to new heights. These spices add warmth and complexity, making your creation perfect for cozy gatherings.

With these creative twists, your gluten free pecan pie will not only satisfy your cravings but also leave a lasting impression on your guests. Happy baking!

Cooking Tips and Notes for Gluten Free Pecan Pie

Creating a perfect gluten free pecan pie can be a delightful experience that’s both rewarding and satisfying! With just a few tips, you can elevate your pie game and impress family and friends.

Choosing the Right Pecans: Opt for fresh, high-quality pecans for an irresistible flavor. If possible, toast your pecans lightly before mixing them into the filling. This enhances their natural oils, resulting in a deeper, richer taste.

Perfecting the Crust: Since we’re making a gluten free pecan pie, pay special attention to the crust. Use a good quality gluten-free all-purpose flour blend that contains xanthan gum, as it helps mimic the texture of traditional wheat flour. If you’re making your own crust, ensure it’s chilled before baking for a flakier result.

Monitoring the Bake: Keep an eye on your pie as it bakes. Ovens can vary, so start checking for doneness about 10 minutes before the suggested baking time. The filling should be set but still slightly wobbly in the center. This will ensure a perfectly textured pie after it cools.

Let It Cool: Once your pie is out of the oven, resist the urge to slice into it right away. Allowing it to cool for a few hours allows the filling to firm up, making your slices beautifully defined and easy to serve.

But with such a delightful dessert, it’s natural to have a few questions. Let’s tackle some common queries that might pop into your mind!

How can I make the pie filling thicker?

If you find your gluten free pecan pie filling a bit too runny, consider adding more thickening agents. A popular choice is cornstarch; mixing one tablespoon with a tablespoon of water before adding it to the filling can create a richer texture. Similarly, you can increase the amount of ground nuts, since pecans naturally help thicken the filling. Always allow your pie to cool completely before slicing, as it will set further as it cools!

Can I make this pie a day ahead?

Absolutely! Making your gluten free pecan pie a day ahead not only saves you time but also enhances the flavor. Just ensure you cover it well with plastic wrap or store it in an airtight container to keep it fresh. When ready to serve, a quick warm-up in the oven can bring back some of that fresh-baked goodness.

What’s the best way to store leftover pecan pie?

Storing your gluten free pecan pie is easy and straightforward. If you have leftovers, keep them in the refrigerator, covered tightly. They should last for about 3-4 days. If you’re looking to store it longer, you can freeze slices wrapped in plastic and aluminum foil, where they’ll maintain their delicious flavor for up to three months. Just remember to let it thaw in the fridge overnight before enjoying!

Description

A delicious paleo-friendly pecan pie made with maple syrup and coconut sugar.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 unbaked prepared paleo pie crust in a 9-inch pie plate
  • 3/4 cup maple syrup (237g)
  • 1 cup coconut sugar (180g)
  • 1 tablespoon tapioca or arrowroot starch (or GF all purpose flour) (7g)
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons melted coconut oil (30 ml)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups pecans (200g)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F/180°C.
  2. Add the maple syrup, sugar, flour, vanilla, eggs, coconut oil and salt to a medium sized mixing bowl and whisk together until fully combined.
  3. Roughly chop 1 cup of pecans and stir into your maple filling.
  4. Pour the filling into the pie crust.
  5. Top the filling with the remaining pecans. You can form a pattern with the remaining pecans or roughly chop and scatter over the top.
  6. Place in the centre of the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes or until the filling is set. After about 20 minutes I usually place a sheet of baking parchment over the top of the pie to prevent the crust from browning too much.
  7. Remove from oven and let cool completely. The filling will firm up and settle as the pie cools.
  8. Slice and serve warm or cold topped with a dollop of coconut whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
  9. You can keep this covered and stored at room temp for up to 2 days or in the fridge up to 5 days.
