Description
A delicious spiced molasses cake topped with creamy frosting.
Ingredients

- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp ground ginger
- 1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp ground cloves
- 1 tsp baking soda
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- ¾ cup brown sugar
- 1 cup molasses (unsulfured)
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- ½ cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×9-inch baking pan.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and all spices.
- Cream butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy, then add molasses and eggs one at a time.
- Alternate adding dry ingredients with buttermilk until the batter is smooth and combined.
- Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out mostly clean.
- Let the cake cool for 10 minutes in the pan, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- For frosting: beat cream cheese and butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth.
- Once the cake is fully cooled, spread the cream cheese frosting evenly on top.
- Decorate with cinnamon dust or candied ginger, slice, and serve.
Notes
- This cake pairs well with a cup of coffee or tea.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
